Steel Bird

Dimentions: 110''H 74''W 40''D
Weight: 1800 Lbs

Steel Bird is a product of the Direct Metal sculpture technique. It was not cast or forged. The work is made entirely of welded steel rods and rebar. Fernandez refers to the first phase of the sculpture's development as the frame, or skeleton. Here, a 72" diameter ring and four other half rings of 5/8" hot rolled steel bar provide the sculpture's basic form. In addition, 140 pieces of ¼" diameter, hot rolled steel bar was MIG welded to strengths the structure. In the second phase, approximately 17,750 individual pieces of CA 60 (4,2mm) and CA 50 (6,3mm) GERDAU rebar, each measuring from ½" to 4" in length, fill in the body with gas-oxyacetylene welding. Between the beak and the body of Steel Bird are 438 MIG welded pieces of ¼" cold rolled carbon steel bars measuring from 1" to 40" in length. A specially designed and welded stainless steel pipe, 20" in diameter, forms the eyes of the bird. The base is two, round steel plates, ½" and 1" thick. The perch is 6" diameter steel pipe with a 1/2" wall.
